Motorised shutters and roller shutters: KNX, Somfy, Nice home automation — a practical guide

Fifteen years ago, motorising a roller shutter meant having a wall switch that raised and lowered a 230V motor with two wires. Today it means having shutters that close automatically when the sun is beating down, roller shutters that lower at a scheduled time in winter to stop heat escaping, “goodnight” scenes that close the whole flat from Alexa. The paradigm shift is home automation: motors have become radio-controlled, and radio commands integrate with any smart home system. This is a practical guide to how it really works, what it costs and what isn’t worth the money.

Three types of motorisation

Tubular motors (90% of cases)

The tubular motor is a cylinder 40-90 cm long and 40-60 mm in diameter that fits inside the winding roller of the roller shutter or sliding shutter. It pulls the curtain (roller shutter) or the leaves (sliding shutter) via the rotation axle.

Typical specifications:

• Light roller shutters (PVC, lightweight aluminium): 10 Nm motor, 220V
• Medium roller shutters (insulated aluminium): 20-30 Nm motor
• Heavy roller shutters (14 mm reinforced aluminium): 30-50 Nm motor
• Sliding shutters (timber or aluminium): 50-90 Nm motor

Tubular motors are quiet (35-45 dB) and self-locking (the roller shutter cannot be lifted by hand from outside — passive burglary resistance). Motor sizing depends on the weight of the curtain: if you still need to choose the material, see our comparison between PVC and aluminium roller shutters.

Motors for hinged shutters

Hinged shutters (the classic type that open like leaves) use different motors:

• Linear (ram) motors: an electric arm that pushes the leaf
• Parallelogram motors (quiet, wiper-arm style): an articulated arm similar to a windscreen wiper
• Universal-joint motors (for heavy leaves, up to 60 kg per leaf)

These cost more (€300-500 per motor versus €80-150 for a standard tubular motor) and installation is more invasive (a hole in the frame, cable run-through).

Mixed operating mechanisms

On sliding shutters you also find crank mechanisms (manual but with a mechanical gearbox) and cord mechanisms with optional motor. These are intermediate solutions often found on historic buildings where the original frame should not be altered.

The three reference brands

On the Italian market, three main manufacturers dominate residential motorisation:

Somfy

French, long-standing market leader, the widest range. Systems:

• Somfy RTS: proprietary 433 MHz radio control, the “old standard” still very widespread (more than 50 million motors installed across Europe)
• Somfy io-homecontrol: an advanced, bidirectional protocol (the motor reports its status to the remote), AES-128 encrypted
• Somfy TaHoma: an app-controlled hub, integrable with Alexa, Google, HomeKit

Main motors for roller shutters: Somfy Oximo io, Oximo WireFree (solar battery-powered), Sonesse io (extremely quiet, for interior curtains).

For hinged shutters: Somfy Yslo io (quiet parallelogram type).

Standard roller shutter motor cost: €130-250 (versus €50-90 for generic Chinese motors)

Nice

Italian, excellent quality, outstanding after-sales support.

• Nice MyHome / Nice IT4Wifi: hub for home automation integration
• Nice TT2 and TT3: standard tubular motor range
• Nice E Mat MI: bidirectional radio motors
• Nice Era Inn Edge: obstacle-detecting motors (they stop when they meet resistance)

Main motors: Nice Era Plus, Nice Era Inn; for sliding shutters, Solemio and Cycle.

Standard roller shutter motor cost: €110-220.

Cherubini

Italian, traditionally more tied to the professional market, high-quality range of motors and centralised control systems.

• Cherubini A41 MEC or Plug & Play: residential tubular motors
• Cherubini WAVE and MAESTRO: radio systems
• Programmable control units for group management

Cost: similar to Nice and Somfy, professional-grade quality.

Other brands

There are very low-cost Chinese motors (€40-80 per motor), unbranded or with invented brand names. They often lack proper CE certification, have no spare parts available, and last 3-5 years instead of 15-20. Not recommended for a serious installation.

Integration with home automation

The real qualitative leap of modern motorisation is home automation integration. Three levels can be distinguished:

Level 1 — Standard local control

• Wall-mounted control panel (up-stop-down)
• Radio remote control
• Schedule programming via a dedicated timer

This is what my parents have. It works, but it isn’t “smart”.

Level 2 — App control

A hub is added that bridges the radio motors with WiFi/the internet:

• Somfy TaHoma Switch: Somfy hub
• Nice MyNice: Nice hub
• Bosch / Schneider / various: proprietary gateways

The hub is configured via app, motors are paired to it, and controlled from a smartphone even when away from home. Scenes can be created: “everything down at 10pm”, “everything up at dawn”, “leaving-home scene”.

Hub cost: €150-350. This is added once, to the whole installation.

Level 3 — Integration with voice assistants and home systems

The hub connects to:

• Amazon Alexa: “Alexa, close all the shutters”
• Google Home: “Hey Google, goodnight scene”
• Apple HomeKit: integration with Siri and iPhone (requires a HomeKit-certified gateway)
• Samsung SmartThings: whole-home integration

Level 4 — Integration with wired bus systems (KNX, etc.)

On complete home automation installations (new builds or full renovations), bus systems are used:

• KNX: an open European standard, the most widespread for professional home automation. Everything is wired with a 4-wire cable (bus + power supply). Reliable, scalable, costly.
• Z-Wave or Zigbee: mesh radio protocols, a wireless alternative to KNX.
• BTicino MyHome, Vimar IDEA, Gewiss Chorus: Italian proprietary standards.

On bus systems, each motor is integrated via a roller shutter actuator (a DIN module that drives the 230V motors from the bus). Complex scenes can be built that respond to sun sensors, anemometers, thermostats, occupancy, alarms.

Retrofitting motorisation onto existing shutters/roller shutters

A common question: “I already have shutters/roller shutters — can I motorise them without replacing them?”

Yes, in 90% of cases. The process of motorising existing roller shutters:

1. The roller shutter box is removed
2. The manual mechanism (strap or crank gear) is taken out
3. The tubular motor is fitted inside the existing roller (if compatible)
4. The power cable (230V) is routed through to a wall box
5. The control (switch or radio receiver) is installed and configured

Average cost for a retrofit-motorised roller shutter: €250-450 turnkey, finished (motor + cabling + labour + radio control).

On existing hinged shutters, the job is more complex (hole for the linear motor, hidden cable run, sturdy fixing) and costs €500-800 per motorised leaf.

What to check beforehand:

• The roller shutter’s roller must be compatible with the motor’s diameter (40, 50, 60 mm standard)
• The box must have room to house the motor plus motor head
• There must be a way to route the cable discreetly through to an existing socket or wall box

Lifespan, warranty, maintenance

Motors from reputable brands (Somfy, Nice, Cherubini) have an average service life of 10-20 years with minimal maintenance. Most reach 15-18 years without problems.

Warranty:

• Somfy: 5 years standard, extendable to 7
• Nice: 5 years
• Cherubini: 3-5 years

Maintenance:

• Nothing in particular. Tubular motors are “fit and forget”.
• Every 5-7 years it’s worth replacing the remote control battery (CR2430 or AAA).
• On parallelogram motors for hinged shutters, lubricating the arm every 2-3 years with silicone grease is good practice.

Typical faults:

• Worn motor head: the plastic piece that receives the rotation and pulls the strap. It breaks after 10-15 years; replacement part €15-30 plus half an hour’s labour.
• End-of-travel out of calibration: the motor doesn’t stop where it should. Reprogrammed in 5 minutes with the remote.
• Remote no longer synced: re-paired in 1 minute.
• “Dead” motor: burnt out from overheating or ageing electronics. Replacement: €200-350 including box disassembly.

Reinforced security shutters

A specific category: reinforced security shutters. These are shutters (usually sliding or hinged) in reinforced aluminium with thicker slats, integrated anti-break-in hardware, and sometimes anti-forcing strips (metal mesh embedded in the slats). They are motorised in the usual way, but with more powerful motors (50-90 Nm) to handle the weight (15-25 kg per leaf versus 5-10 kg for a standard shutter). Additional motorisation cost: €50-150 per leaf.

A typical choice for isolated villas and country houses: centrally motorised reinforced security shutters, with full-closure scenes controllable via app or keypad.

For a villa with motorised sliding shutters (10-12 shutters), expect €4,000-7,000.
