Climate characteristics and building heritage

Bologna is classified in climate zone E with around 2,259 degree days: cold, damp winters, with frequent persistent fog, night frosts between December and February and occasional snow, and very hot, sultry summers, marked by the typical Po Valley humidity and peaks consistently above 35 degrees. High relative humidity in all seasons makes managing condensation and window air tightness crucial. On the building front, Bologna is a city with a strong identity: the historic centre, enclosed within the ring of boulevards, is famous for its nearly 40 kilometres of porticoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for the compact run of medieval, Renaissance, 17th-18th-century and 19th-century buildings lining the main streets. The first-ring districts, including Santo Stefano, Saragozza, Mazzini and San Donato, hold Art Nouveau and 1930s-50s residential blocks, while Reno, Borgo Panigale, Navile and Savena host a substantial stock of 1960s-80s terraced apartment blocks, today natural candidates for deep energy retrofits. The hill areas (San Mamolo, Colli, Bellaria) and the towns of the inner province (Casalecchio, San Lazzaro, Pianoro, Castel Maggiore) feature recent high-quality single- and two-family villas.

Most common replacement types in Bologna

Four types of work are particularly recurring in our Bologna projects. The second recurring type is triple glazing in 1960s-80s blocks in the Navile, Saragozza-Reno, Borgo Panigale, Mazzini and San Donato districts: bluEvolution 82 profiles, 4-12-4-12-4 low-E double-argon glazing with Uw values between 0.9 and 1.0 W/m²K, capable of radically transforming a flat's energy performance. The third typical job is the supply of 44.2 acoustic laminated glazing for lower floors of buildings facing viale Aldini, viale Roma, the ring-road corridor, via Stalingrado and other high-traffic arteries, where outdoor noise levels consistently exceed 65 dB. Finally, for villas and semi-detached houses in the hills and the inner province, we regularly supply sliding patio doors with Maco hardware and reinforced thermal-break profiles, combined with selective solar glazing to control summer overheating.

Local restrictions and tax incentives

Bologna's historic centre and the portico system, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are subject to strict restrictions enforced by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Metropolitan City of Bologna and by the Municipality of Bologna's Building Regulations, which govern materials, finishes, glazing bar layouts and the colour tones of shutters and windows on public-facing elevations. Even outside the historic ring, parts of the Saragozza, Santo Stefano and Mazzini districts are subject to specific restrictions on protected buildings.
